Lets talk CPR
It’s one of those things everyone thinks they remember from school — you know, somewhere between the recovery position and that weird plastic dummy that always smelled faintly of disinfectant. But when something actually happens, most of us freeze and suddenly forget everything except the fact we’re panicking.
Here’s the truth though: bystander CPR saves lives. Real lives. Ordinary lives. The kind of people you love, live with, work with or bump into at Asda when you’re just trying to buy milk. When someone’s heart stops, the person standing closest becomes the most important part of their survival. And yes — that person is you.
Why CPR matters
When the heart stops, every minute without CPR drops the chance of survival by about 10%. After a few minutes, the brain starts losing oxygen, and things go downhill fast.
Ambulances are incredible, but they’re not teleporting. You’re already there. And that makes you the difference between someone having a chance… and not.
CPR keeps blood moving until help arrives. You’re basically acting as someone’s temporary heart.
What “bystander CPR” actually means
Bystander CPR is exactly what it sounds like: CPR done by the person who’s already there. A friend. A stranger. A neighbour. The person who was just walking past with a meal deal and suddenly found themselves in the middle of an emergency- and it could be you!
The facts you can’t ignore
-
80% of cardiac arrests happen at home
-
Survival rates can triple when CPR is started quickly
-
Every minute without CPR reduces survival by 10%
-
Most survivors are alive because someone nearby stepped in
CPR isn’t a medical skill — it’s a community skill. The more people who know it, the more lives are saved.

Women are less likely to receive CPR — an uncomfortable truth!
Women are significantly less likely to receive CPR from bystanders. Not because they don’t need it. Not because CPR works differently. But because people hesitate.
Why? Because of breasts. Because people worry about touching a woman’s chest. Because of awkwardness. Because of fear of doing something wrong.
But CPR is done on the sternum — the flat bone in the centre of the chest. Breasts do not change where you push. Breasts do not make CPR unsafe. Breasts do not make CPR inappropriate.
Women deserve the same chance of survival as men. Your hands could be the reason they get it.
Why learning CPR matters–give someone’s family the chance to say “thank you” instead of “goodbye”
Learning CPR means you can:
-
Act quickly
-
Stay calm
-
Know what to do
-
Save a life- literally
It’s one of the most powerful things you can learn, and it takes minutes — not hours.
